Why teach spelling by pattern

English spelling looks irregular, but most words follow patterns that link sounds to letters. When children learn that the silent e makes the vowel say its name (cap → cape), or that “ai” and “ay” both spell the long a sound, they can spell hundreds of words they have never practised. Pattern-based lists also support reading: the same knowledge helps children decode new words. The lists progress roughly in the order many phonics programmes introduce patterns, from short vowels in kindergarten and first grade to vowel teams, r-controlled vowels and endings in second grade.

Practice activities

• Rainbow writing — trace each word three times in different colours.
• Missing letters — fill in the missing letter to complete each word.
• Word scramble — unscramble letters to make a spelling word.
• ABC order — put the week’s words in alphabetical order.
• Sort by pattern — sort mixed words into their pattern groups.
• Sentence writing — use five spelling words in sentences.
• Weekly test sheet — numbered lines for a Friday test, plus a bonus word.

A weekly spelling routine

Keep practice short — 10 to 15 minutes a day works better than one long session. Say each word aloud, tap the sounds, then write it.

Tips for helping children spell

• Say the word slowly and stretch the sounds before writing.
• Point out the pattern each time: “the e at the end makes the i say its name”.
• Use look–say–cover–write–check for tricky words.
• Praise correct patterns even if the whole word is not right yet.
• Revisit earlier patterns in later weeks so they stick.

Adapting the lists

Every class has different needs, so the lists are a starting point. For children who find a list easy, add challenge words that follow the same pattern — “splash” and “thrill” for blends, “sparkle” for r-controlled vowels. For children who need support, start with five words and add more as they succeed. Mixing a few words from earlier weeks into each new list keeps patterns fresh, and a personal word list of often-misspelled everyday words, such as “because” and “said”, can run alongside the pattern lists.
